How We Decorate Our Christmas Tree in 5 Easy Steps

CHRISTMAS TREE SECRETS

Perhaps the best overall secret is; how can we make this wonderful tradition of trimming the tree organized and complete with ease. Some of these organizational ideas, which I will share in a moment, came from the chaos of raising a house full of boys. When I needed their help with the tree, it only lasted about 20 minutes at the most. So out of necessity, I had to simplify the process. Keep it traditional yet save room for creativity and newness each Christmas season. What stayed the same was the love of a Fraser fur tree. The thin pliable branches with short Evergreen needles have always been my favorite to work with, from start to finish. Additionally, we aim for a taller and leaner tree each year to give our growing family more floor space.

Step 1: Lights

Once your tree is up and stable, I recommend letting the tree’s branches rest and drop a bit. Also, remember to water your tree consistently, so that it stays healthy and full.

The first step I always take is putting the lights on. I begin at the bottom and work my way up to the top, circling the tree as I go. You can loop them around a branch or open the double cords and pull small branches through to make it stay in place easier. All of the lights don’t have to be just on the ends. You can also tuck them in the middle and back of the branches. Do not be shy with how many strands you put on! Something I say, and believe, is that you can never have too many lights!

Step 2: Ribbon

This step is all about is your soft ornamentation detail, such as individual bows or a twisted ribbon. It could also be streamers cascading down or organically circling the tree. Let the shape of the tree lead the way!

Step 3: Style Ornaments

First, think of whatever ornament you have the most of, then think of it as your foundation. For example, for this particular tree, it is the silver and gold balls in all different sizes. Typically the larger ones are at the bottom and small at the top. Though, I prefer to mix the sizes while still creating balance and symmetry.

Step 4: Personal Ornaments

This is my favorite part! Now is when you add all your family ornaments that are special and sentimental. They can be homemade ones, miniature photos, travel memories, and family ornaments that were once your great grandparents. Fill the entire tree with all those treasured pieces!

Step 5: Topper and Skirt

The final step is adding a topper and bottom skirt for your tree. I have never been able to find a big enough skirt for my liking, so I grab a bolt of woven fabric and wrap it around the base. Next, I layer on a shimmering gold mesh to dress it up a bit.

To let your tree shine, place your sparkling star, shimmering angel, or a glamorous oversized looped bow right on the top. The most important part is making sure someone holds the ladder for you while you place it!

Once complete, turn up the Christmas music, sip some sweet eggnog and enjoy your beautiful tree!
