How to Select Mirrors For Your Interiors

Over the years, we have learned a lot about mirrors and appreciate the versatility they provide for a space. Once the selection process begins, there is a lot to think about and consider. We start with the needs and functions to confirm the size. Then, select the shape and style inspired by the space. Whether they are modern or traditional, the frame and finish is a detail that is important as well.

In our Hunting Valley project, we chose to install a mirror over the fireplace in the small front sitting room. We decided that we needed to keep the mirror style and size clean, classic, and small. We did this so that it did not conflict with the family heirloom decorative pieces on the mantle while also letting the beauty of the mantle’s historical woodwork shine through.

This Foyer may be small, but it does not take away its importance. It is the first impression when friends and family arrive, and this antique mirror was the perfect choice to make the best first impression. We loved how the mirror’s narrow size and scale complemented the entrance table. This provided us space to layer in a simple, crisp table lamp and a couple of decor pieces that would not take away from the beauty of the mirror. The finish on both the mirrors continues the antique brass details throughout the home. As well as reflect the natural light, which is always enjoyed.

In our Lander Road project, we decided to apply round mirrors behind gourd-shaped lamps. We wanted to layer and repeat similar shapes in a finish of soft silver on the frames. Here the reflection of light makes the bedroom feel much larger.

The mirror in the dining room was selected due to its simplicity in style. We did not want it to fight with the antique buffet mixed with the mid-century modern glass lamps.

For our Country Club project, the ladies' locker room is a great example of mixing mirror finishes of silver and brass. In the locker room, both mirrors have a modern style. In addition, they are bathroom-grade or bath-rated, which means they are shatterproof, plated not painted, anti-fog from moisture, and security installation is available upon request. We kept the mirror style and grade/scale appropriate for this busy place while never compromising the importance of functional luxury.

In conclusion, remember mirrors are a design element that can make a big difference. Here’s our mirror checklist for the selection process, as we’ve always believed interior design should be enjoyed!

1. Determine your needs in functionality to select size and scale.

2. Select a shape and style inspired by the space.

3. Always pay attention to frame selection and finish options, as the details matter.

4. Characteristics of mirrors: provide a reflection that brings in more light, make a room feel larger, and provide function and style.
