Why Columbus, Indiana?

On our way back from a recent trip in the Midwest to visit family, my Mr. C planned a stop for us in the small city of Columbus, IN. A city of true world-class architecture, and a study in Modern Architecture.

The Visitors Center is an original Storey House 1864, with a renovation and addition by KEVIN ROCHE in 1995, with a fabulous Yellow Neon Chandelier inside by DALE CHIHULY, 1995.

In front of the Bartholomew Co. Library by I.M. PEI 1969 is The Large Arch by HENRY MOORE 1971 that has aged beautifully. I loved the strength in scale and the comfort its organic shape gives. Across from the Large Arch is the amazing First Christain Church by ELIEL SARRINEN 1942. We spent quite a bit of time exploring the interior space.

Gorgeous in design and craftsmanship in these front doors.

The interior of the church is expansive and bright, drawing one's eyes to heaven. SAARINEN blended wood, stone, metal and glass in quiet harmony, creating a space that is calm and peaceful.

Here is a wonderful weavers work tapestry, Sermon on the Mount by LOJA & ELIEL SAARINEN 1942 that’s incredible.

We absolutely loved the spacious Irwin Office Building of glass by KEVIN ROCHE 1982 and Conference Center by DAN KILEY 1954 / JACK CURTIS 1969 the landscape architecture of trees that created symmetry amongst the grounds are pristine, I wanted to have a picnic right in the middle.

There’s truly so much to explore and learn about architecture in Columbus. The Banks, Fire Stations, and Educational facilities, even the city jail, are all the result of the movement of modern architecture.

We stayed at the beautiful, Inn at Erwin Gardens built in 1864. Four generations of the Erwin Family lived in this Victorian design home.

I don’t think it will be our last trip here. I found it to be interesting and inspiring. Be sure to plan a long weekend here! There are great restaurants and a fun brewery too. I think they are right, Columbus IN is unexpected and unforgettable!
